He is eager to talk about their beliefs and hear the good news. Too much. When the theological discussion takes a dark turn, the sisters are equally eager to leave the house. If they can. Heretic is an intense, chilling, and terrifyingly honest discussion of the horror of ideas. It’s thrilling to see where each topic and twist takes the characters. I enjoyed the deep dialogues about myths, choices, and sensitive topics like polygamy and Mormon underwear. Hugh Grant (Mr. Reed) was in attendance at this world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. Grant seemed to relish the uncharacteristic role of “villain.” He was well cast, along with Chloe East and Sophie Thatcher, both of whom were also present at the premiere, because they all seemed to act instinctively and from the heart. East and Thatcher were once Mormons themselves, and Grant could identify with certain aspects of Mr. Reed. “I found,” Grant said of his character’s religious views, “that we had a lot in common.” No wonder they were so good. They brought some of their life experiences to the table. Great cast.
